3.5mm Audio cable (spare parts bin)
The heart of this build is a Baofeng UV5R Walkie Talkie and a programmable timer relay to control the on off keying. I began by drilling and adding the SMA male to the SMA extension cable to get the antenna connection to the outside of the ammo can. I found that the RF coming from the transmitter was enough to reset the relay each time it keys up. By putting the antenna on the outside of the ammo can, it provides a faraday cage and enough RF shielding to prevent interference with the relay operation. This also allows for use of various SMA adapters to couple your fox to any wide range of permanent mount or mobile antennas. I had a 3.5mm double male audio cable in my junk drawer that I cut in half. One side goes to the MP3 player; I only use 1 channel of the cable coming from the MP3 player (ie. left or right channel and ground). With the MP3 player that I used, no additional audio coupling devices are needed, I was able to connect the audio directly to the microphone in of the other half of the 3.5mm cable going to the UV5R. I was then able to connect the PTT in for the UV5R to Normally Open side of the programmable relay. Common of the relay connects to the common ground connection. I used my PC to add the desired audio files (voice ID and Morse ID, MP3 or WAV) to the SD card and put into the player. Connect the battery eliminator to the 12v socket and add battery spades. Program the relay for the desired on and off interval, connect the antenna of your choosing and power everything up and happy hunting.
